They are particularly suitable for multilevel formats because they can target a broad range of difficulty levels and reflect authentic language processing. Intra-text gap-filling items, in which the input text serves as the word bank at the same time, are a type of test item that has been developed relatively recently. The article discusses the principles of designing intra-text gap-filling tasks, examines their validity, and evaluates how they can be aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
